Caring for our planet

Reducing our damaging impact on the environment

Servas members believe that our lives are enriched when we meet, interact, share and learn from each other.

We are also aware that these meetings – both physically in real life and virtually using digital tools – leave an ecological footprint on Earth. For example, both travels and online meetings generate emissions of environmentally harmful greenhouse gases.

It’s a growing challenge and responsibility for Servas as an organisation and its individual members to continuously try to minimize these negative effects.

Be part of the solution, not the problem

We believe that most people would like to live in harmony and at peace with the nature of Earth instead of destroying it. That’s why Servas – among other actions – has developed a list of tips for sustainable travels.

We want people to continue travelling and meeting each other – but we also want to guide you to make informed decisions based on what’s best for society from an environmental, social and economic perspective.

The list can help you be part of the solutions, not the problems, that are exposing humanity and the Earth to some of the greatest challenges in the history of mankind.

Sustainable web meeting culture

The number of Servas web based meetings with a focus on peace, education and intercultural learning have increased rapidly during the last four to five years. These virtual meetings generally put less burden on the Earth than physical ones, but they, too, can cause environmental harm by generating CO2 emissions as a result of the consumption of energy produced with fossil fuels.

We would like your ideas on how to make virtual meetings and other Servas activities more climate smart. Please contact us and send us your suggestions.

Servas and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Servas is based on the fundamental principle that equal rights of all human beings as well as respect and care of the environment lay a foundation for a more peaceful world.*

That’s why Servas has chosen to actively work for the realisation of a selected number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
