Servas und die Vereinten Nationen

Servas International is an international, non-governmental, multicultural peace association run by volunteers in almost 120 countries. Founded in 1949 by Bob Luitweiler. as a peace movement, Servas International is a non-profit organization working to build understanding, tolerance and world peace, was granted consultative status at ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), in 1973. From the beginning, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has been the main entry point into the UN system for NGOs. ECOSOC remains the only main UN body with a formal framework for NGO participation. In 1946, 41 NGOs were granted consultative status by the council; by 1992 more than 700 NGOs had attained consultative status and the number has been steadily increasing eversince to more than 3,400 organizations today. NGOs may contribute to a number of activities, including information dissemination, awareness raising, development education, policy advocacy, joint operational projects, participation in intergovernmental processes and in the contribution of services and technical expertise. NGOs have a mandate to disseminate UN information. Our representatives in NYC, Vienna and Geneva attend sessions, help Servas members willing to visit UN venues, disseminate information about the United Nations principles and activities, cosign joint NGO statements, and at times are able to deliver written or oral declarations on behalf of Servas.
